Tokyo 2020 review: Laura Muir in the 1500m semi-final

Jason Kenny became Britain’s greatest Olympian with a silver medal in the men’s team sprint.

Kenny joined Sir Bradley Wiggins on eight medals, but has six gold to five for his former teammate.

He had been tied with Sir Chris Hoy on seven, with the Scotsman also owning six gold, but now officially becomes his country’s most decorated Olympian.

Kenny, along with teammates Ryan Owens and Jack Carlin, were aiming for a fourth consecutive Olympic team pursuit crown but were huge underdogs against the Netherlands.

The Dutch won the final comfortably, crossing the finish line in an Olympic record time of 41.369 seconds, followed by Great Britain in 44.589.

Kenny has two more chances to win a medal in Tokyo and take the top spot in terms of the number of Olympic medals won by a Briton.

He was generally humble after making history, telling the BBC: “It was really good, I think we put all our hearts into the second race to get into the final, we knew we had a way to go. I had nothing in the final, I sucked, but we tried so hard to get there.

“It’s really special, every time you come back it gets harder, you do your first Olympics and you get some momentum, but to repeat it and do it over and over again.

“We’re going to give it our all, we focus on team spirit, it was always our best chance to get on the podium, we’re going to give it our all.”

Earlier, Kenny’s wife Laura won her fifth Olympic medal taking silver in the women’s team pursuit behind world record-setting Germany.

GB’s Lutalo Muhammad loses taekwondo final at the last second

Lutalo Muhammad was in tears after suffering unimaginable grief when Olympic gold was snatched from him in the last SECOND.

The GB team were set to celebrate their second taekwondo gold medal in 24 hours, after Jade Jones brought the ingot back on Thursday night, when Muhammad was caught by a final header to the head of Ivorian Cheick Sallah Cisse.

In the only sport where kicking an opponent in the head is actively encouraged and not a red card, Muhammad lost 8-6 in the men’s -80kg final and Cisse went on a lap of honor. delirious after his last dramatic roll of the dice.

“I am devastated,” Muhammad later admitted. “This is the lowest moment of my entire life.”

A silver medal is not to be sniffed at, but Muhammad will spend sleepless nights wondering why he passed out and absorbed that reverse turn and kick. You couldn’t make it up.

With most of the crowd on the African’s side, the wonder Walthamstow had taken a 6-3 lead and was about to take the checkered flag when Cisse landed the decisive blow straight to the horn.

In the midst of the gold rush there were heartbreakers for Britain in Rio, none more cruel than this unprecedented defeat.

Muhammad, 25, was the subject of hate mail – almost certainly from supporters of his rival Aaron Cook – when he was controversially selected for London 2012 ahead of the then world No.1.

A bronze medal for Muhammad four years ago proved the coaches right, but Cook took offense and took the unlikely path of becoming a plastic Moldovan.

After qualifying to represent Moldova here in Rio, Cook’s Olympic campaign was short-lived: he suffered a shock first-round loss to Chinese Tapei’s Liu Wei-Ting.

Do they think it’s Moldova? Now it’s Cook’s turn – but Muhammad continued on, ignoring a nightmarish draw to reach the final with a convincing 12-7 victory over reigning European champion Azerbaijan Milad Beigi Harchegani.

Muhammad admits he’s not on good terms with Cook after the stir he sparked over his retirement for his home Olympics, but two back-to-back medals have confirmed the picks’ choice.

“Cook is a world class athlete and he will always be dangerous, but we are not friends,” he said.

“Do I think I’m better than him?” Absoutely. And the place to prove it is in the ring.

Muhammad came within a second of being an Olympic champion. That single tick of the clock will haunt him for at least the next four years.

Dan Silver delivers his definitive review ahead of Friday’s big launch

Selected starSelected starSelected starSelected starSelected star

After months of speculation, sound bites and spins, the next generation of console games finally kick off in the UK at midnight tonight with the launch of Microsoft’s Xbox One (lucky North American gamers have put the hand on Sony’s PlayStation 4 at the end of last week). And the good news is, it was worth the wait.

Microsoft’s monolithic black box won’t win any design awards, but that’s another story beneath that functional exterior. Much has been said about the company’s multimedia ambitions for the Xbox One, and while the lack of integration with Sky and Virgin Media is a big blow, you can still plug your set-top box into the back of the console and perform multiple tasks, watch live TV in a window on the side of the screen while playing video games at the same time.

Microsoft calls this feature “snapping” and it works for all console apps, including Skype which, thanks to the Kinect 2.0 camera accessory, now offers full screen HD video calling on your TV for the first time.

The controversial Kinect mandatory inclusion has pushed the Xbox One price above the all-important £ 400 barrier, but once you’ve used facial recognition and transparent voice commands to log in and control your console, what initially appears to be a gadget soon becomes an essential part of the experience.

Also factor in full voice control of your home entertainment system, thanks to Kinect’s built-in infrared blaster, and you’ve got a set that really looks like space-age tech rather than just a desktop console. games.

Let’s face it, though: Most people who buy an Xbox One will be intending to play games on it. And like with most console launches, there just aren’t enough of them. Or rather, there isn’t enough of it to deliver a next-gen experience equal to the hardware.

Yes, the graphics are generally stunning and are a real generational leap beyond what console gamers are currently used to. But with a few exceptions, much of the gameplay will be too familiar to Xbox 360 owners (check out my reviews of the 10 Biggest Launch Titles here).

Potentially groundbreaking titles like Titanfall, Watch Dogs, and Destiny aren’t due out until next year, so you won’t be missing out on much if you decide to postpone the splash until after the Christmas rush.

That said, early adopters will still have a lot to show, however. The Xbox One is an impressive and powerful multimedia machine that has the potential to forever change the way you interact with home technology.

The Xbox One releases on November 22 at midnight and has a suggested retail price of £ 429.99.

Much like the other great West Coast PlayStation franchise, Uncharted, the God of War series pretty much honed its formula from the start. So what do the developers do when the men in black suits call in to demand another iteration?

As with their Naughty Dog counterparts, Sony’s Santa Monica studio’s response is scale. God of War has never been underestimated, but this prequel redefines the epic. The only thing more remarkable than the prison built from the chest cavity of a treacherous titan in the opening chapter is that this is just the tip of the Ascension iceberg.

Your guide to this sword and sandal slasher is Kratos, a psychopathic Spartan with vicious chains strapped to his wrists, who has various sharp sticks with which to eviscerate a fabulous army of mythological opponents. This time around, he also has four elementary magic schools to master and a handful of new toys, including one that lets you manipulate time.

These are mainly used to solve increasingly complex puzzles. There’s arguably more platforming and problem-solving than is strictly necessary, but while there are sections that make you curse the gods in frustration, they do offer welcome breaks from the demanding combat.

The battles are bigger and bloodier than before. Button drummers won’t get far except at the easiest level, but practice doing combos and perfecting counters and you’ll soon understand Kratos and his brutal ballet. Those divisive Quick Time Event finishing moves always abound, of course, but the gloriously bloody, mind-blowing payoffs justify the means.

Ascension also introduces a fun, if not essential, competitive multiplayer to the franchise, with a handful of fun, objective-based team modes in the midst of deathmatch.

There’s also a wave-based co-op mode to mix things up further, but the sleek single-player campaign is still the star of this show.

Ascension may not advance its genre, but it lives up to the supreme standards of the God of War series. Brawlers just aren’t better than that.

(12+)

PlayStation 3. Released Friday

This collaboration between one of Japan’s biggest video game studios, Level-5, and its famous animation house Studio Ghibli is even more lavish than you might have imagined.

With its cutscenes, characters and animation, Ni no Kuni could well have won the Oscar for best game of this generation.

There are also brains to match beauty. Ni no Kuni is a characteristically complex Japanese role-playing game (JRPG). The combat is both real-time and strategic – the collection of companions and the training sections alone could fuel a Pokémon-style game – and the alchemy-making system will have you experimenting endlessly to discover the right ones. spell recipes.

If this all sounds too good to be true, know that Ni no Kuni has all of the usual JRPG caveats – and more.

The story of a boy, Oliver, coming to terms with his mother’s death while saving a fantasy kingdom from destruction is painstakingly drawn, yet exhaustingly told.

Even by tireless standards like this, there is an eternity of explanation to be enjoyed / endured.

And while the game was clearly designed to appeal to players of all ages, some of its childish characters, fairytale backdrops, and overly twee styles could alienate adults.

Level 5 also takes the lead in punishing new extremes by refusing to allow you full gameplay control until around 3pm.

Connoisseurs of the JRPG genre and Studio Ghibli fans won’t be canceling pre-orders, but more traditional gamers may well find this more difficult to sell.

That said, if you can handle the sentimentality and have some time to spare, this beautiful epic will give you a nice comeback.

Deep: levels are too high

The cave

(12+)

Xbox 360. PlayStation 3. Wii U. PC. Outside now

This mid-priced, download-only version of the mind of Monkey Island creator Ron Gilbert is a noble attempt to combine point-and-click adventure with console-friendly platformer play.

Choose to guide three of the seven distinct (and distinctly delusional) potential adventurers through a surreal and sensitive underground playground. Each character has their own thematic section in the cave and a unique ability to overcome obstacles.

But the sprawling levels mean an otherwise awesome trip is crippled by a tedious flashback. This is nothing compared to the insane repetition of subsequent races, however. To see all the game has to offer, it will take at least three trips through the cave, but only the most masochistic will make it.

Rating: 3/5

The Wii can sing: pass the microphone

Wii U Sing Party

(3+)

Wii U. Released Now

We’re still waiting for the Wii U’s second screen to transform the game, but there’s no denying the positive effect it has on social media like Sing Party.

The ability to queue tracks on the gamepad while someone is in full flow means the fun never stops.

It offers a good dose of pleasure. In addition to a “stand up and sing” mode, there are team games with “mike” rounds and a party mode that encourages song, dance and wimotes to shake like maracas.

But all karaoke games rocket or fall depending on their songlists. The 50 tracks encompass everyone from Sinatra to Bieber, but you suspect that trying to please everyone can end up thrilling no one.

DLC will fix that, however, and more often than not, it hits the right note.
