Arsenal are close to signing Marquinhos from Sao Paulo but the deal could be called off after the player reportedly signs a pre-contract deal with Wolves

Marquinhos’ proposed transfer to Arsenal is in play

Wolves are seeking legal action over Arsenal’s deal to sign Brazilian teenager Marquinhos from Sao Paulo.

The Gunners have reportedly agreed a £2.5million move with the Brazilian side and a transfer is expected to be announced in the coming days. The 19-year-old is said to have signed a contract at Arsenal and traveled to London for a medical.

Marquinhos, who can play in midfield or on the wing, is one of the highest-rated youngsters in Brazilian football. He represented his country at youth level and played 41 senior games for Sao Paulo, scoring four goals and providing three assists.

Sao Paulo initially hoped to keep Marquinhos on their books, signing a five-year deal with the talent in 2019. Yet a FIFA ruling means the deal will expire this summer and he’s free to sign for another club – who should be Arsenal. .

But, according to Yahoo Sports in Brazil, Wolves had agreed a pre-contract deal with Marquinhos. It is claimed Wolves have approached a law firm in Brazil to take action against the player for allegedly breaking the deal to join the Gunners. As first reported by the Daily Mail, legal action against Arsenal and Sao Paulo are their other options. Mirror Football understands that Marquinhos’ contract is due to end on July 12, with his new contract at Wolves then due to start on July 14.

Sao Paulo remain confident that Marquinhos will join Arsenal, despite the allegations. “Sao Paulo still haven’t received the money from Arsenal, but it’s calm,” a source told Yahoo Sports in Brazil. “The agreement has legal safeguards and the player has already undergone medical examinations.”

Marquinhos’ move to the Emirates caused a stir in Brazil. “It’s nonsense,” said World Cup winner Vampeta when asked about the transfer. “They are going to lose Marquinhos to Arsenal for £2.5million.

“I don’t know if you remember I said I was watching Audax academy matches, Marquinhos in U15, he was already making the difference. I said here on the show: ‘There’s a U15 in Sao Paulo, Marquinhos’ – now he’s going to leave on a silver platter.”

Sao Paulo head coach Rogerio Ceni is also said to be furious with the club’s decision to allow Marquinhos to leave. The teenager was only used sporadically during the 2021-22 campaign but should have played a starring role at Sao Paulo next season.

Arsenal are looking to improve their squad after failing to qualify for the Champions League. “Recruitment-wise, I will always defer to Edu and Mikel, but I know they have a plan of the type of player and specific positions we need to strengthen before the summer,” the chief wrote. club Josh Kroenke in his program notes.

“I will defer to them and support them in any way I can in their quest to elevate the quality of the team and ensure that we have the right player mentality. We only want players who are passionate about Arsenal football. Club.”
